Today, the West Africa Cable System (WACS) starts operation in Botswana.
According to The Monitor, the government through Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) and Namibia have entered a joint venture and invested in the WACS.
BTC said in a statement: “The cable is designed to support present and future Internet, e-commerce, data, video and voice services. Namibia will operate and maintain the cable landing station while BTC and other stakeholders will have access to the facility and be able to ‘co-locate’ their services within the station”.
BTC slashed its wholesale Internet bandwidth prices by 59 percent due to the commissioning of WACS undersea cable.
The cable links South Africa with the United Kingdom (UK) along the west coast of Africa covering a distance of 14,000km.
