With its Voith Inline Thrusters (VIT), Voith currently is the only manufacturer world-wide to produce transverse thrusters with permanent-magnet synchronous machine technology (RIM drives) with a power of 1,500kW.

At the SMM, the leading maritime industry trade fair, Voith last week presented a RIM drive which can be extended from the vessel hull and is equipped with an azimuth gear: the Voith Inline Propulsor (VIP).

The VIP Swing-Out Azimuth Thruster is a special type of Voith Inline Propulsor which can be extended hydraulically from the vessel hull and can be turned limitlessly through 360 degrees once it has reached the end position. Combined with the advantages of the RIM drive concept, this special design is particularly advantageous for the dynamic positioning of megayachts and for offshore applications.

The retractability of the Voith Inline Propulsors has enormous benefits for large vessels in particular: This auxiliary propulsion system significantly increases vessel maneuverability and the vessel can be steered more precisely when entering and leaving port. Retracting the auxiliary propulsion units once they are no longer needed and when cruising in the open sea is beneficial with regard to speed, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Voith Inline Thrusters and Voith Inline Propulsors are RIM drives. This technology combines electric, mechanic and hydrodynamic elements and ensures low vibrations, extremely smooth running, excellent hydrodynamic characteristics as well as an environmentally-friendly, compact and low-maintenance design.
