The National Maritime Week started last Monday (September 24, 2012) and kicked off with activities that looked back on the contributions of Filipino maritime workers for the country and the maritime industry in general.
Officials and members of the Associated Marine Officers and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP) took the lead during the first day of the week-long celebration.
“It is very timely that we start the maritime week celebration in honouring our seafarers… They are our brave seafarers who always sacrifice for being away from their families and loved ones just to serve and satisfy the needs of the international trade,” said AMOSUP President Conrado Oca .
Also in attendance during the event was Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) acting Administrator Nic Conti who also acknowledged the contribution of Filipino seafarers not only in the country but also all over the world.
Conti added that Filipino seafarers have been a major factor in the growth of international trade as well as the promotion of safety of life at sea. The Philippines continue to be a leading supplier of seafarers globally where there are currently more than 300,000 maritime workers deployed worldwide.
