The Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association, an Aleut tribal non-profit organization, has received funds to commence tidal research in False Pass, at the end of the Alaska Peninsula.

The project that explores the potential power of ocean currents has been granted $200,000 of the Department of Energy funds, reports Thedutchharborfisherman.

Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) is selected to conduct the research at False Pass. The company is also conducting a similar research in Cook Inlet.

Scientist Bruce Wright stated that the research will include several elements, such as examining the power grid at False Pass to determine how much power the community uses.

The research will also determine what kind of power output could be available by harnessing the local waters.

Once the data is collected, Wright and his team will spend the winter analysing data and coming up with the next step.

Wright added: “I’m pretty excited about the project because of the potential it means for Alaska, especially these remote communities.”
