Uganda and Dar es Salaam-Tanzania have agreed to build an undersea cable via Mutukula which will serve as an alternative route to overcome the inconveniences caused by businesses persistent internet cable breakdown.
As AllAfrica reports, the cable will ensure internet reliability in Uganda.
As Mr. Mnungu of the Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) said, Uganda already has the connection with Kenya cables, but the alternative route is needed in case of a breakdown.
“So far TTCL is also negotiating with Burundi, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to be connected with TTCL Broadband which is the custodian of National Information and Communication Technology Back Bone (NICTBB) that would in turn get the countries connected to world,” Mr. Mnungu said.
The Mutukula-Tanzania cable route will be welcomed by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector because it will provide a safe alternative every time the fiber cables in Kenya are damaged.
According to the Director for Technical Services at National Information Technology Authority Uganda (NITA-U) Mr. Kahiigi, the government will embark on the project starting in November this year.
The undersea cable project will be funded by the government and various supporters.
