The UK government is considering the installation of subsea cables which would transfer wind power from Ireland to the National Grid, BBC reports.

The Irish-based wind farms could provide power for three million UK homes.

According to Mike O’Neill from Element Power, the £6bln infrastructure project will benefit UK, Wales and Ireland economies.

The electricity from 40 wind farms, with a total of 700 wind turbines based in Bog of Allen, would be sent to UK via undersea cable.

The cables would resurface at two locations in Wales, one at Pentir near Caernarfon, and the other at Pembroke.

Element Power said to BBC that the environmental impact of the project would be minimal, but it would call for the building of two converter stations, which would be around the size of two football pitches each.
