When it comes to cargo handling equipment Finnish company Cargotec surely secured an enviable position in the maritime and offshore industry providing integrated cargo flow solutions.

Referring to a recent equipment order that Cargotec had received from Ignazio Messina & C. S.p.A. , World Maritime News staff asked Cargotec to tell us something more about their previous collaboration with the Italian shipping specialist.

As informed by the company, in 2009 Cargotec’s RoRo business line cooperated with Ignazio Messina & C.S.p.A. and was involved in the development of a new type of multi-purpose vessel, a RoRo/Containership (ConRo), post-Panamax. The vessel fulfills the most modern technical and ecological requirements. Cargotec received a contract to design and supply efficient tailor-made MacGregor cargo handling equipment. MacGregor cargo access equipment for four ConRo vessels was ordered to be built at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Company (DSME), in South Korea.

The 50.5m-long angled MacGregor jumbo stern quarter ramp has a capacity to carry up to 350 tons, and makes access to the cargo section. A top-hinged watertight MacGregor stern door, rampway doors, ramp covers, division doors, power packs and electrical systems, are supplied to enable fast loading and discharging in the ports. During 2012, Jolly Diamante will be followed into service by Jolly Perla, Jolly Cristallo and Jolly Quarzo, to be operated by Messina Line.

Among various recognitions from the Italian naval ship register Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) classification society and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the Messina group has been awarded a prestigious ‘Green Plus’ certificate by the certifying the ship’s safety levels and environmentally-responsible systems on Jolly Diamante.

When WMN staff asked whether they plan to expand the collaboration with Ignazio Messina & C. S.p.A. on other projects, Cargotec said that there are no concrete proposals on the table so far, but that they would be delighted to extend the collaboration.
