Sudan and Saudi Arabia announced plans to start deep-water mining in the Red Sea basin in 2014, reports AFP.
The licence to explore the area of about 115 kilometres (71 miles) west of Jeddah has been awarded in 2010 to Manafa International Trade Company of Saudi Arabia and Diamond Fields International Ltd of Canada.
The Red Sea basin is believed to have rich resources of gold and cooper, and the Sudan’s Minister of Mining Kamal Abdel Latif expects to start production in 2014.
