In an incident that happened this morning at Jurong Shipyard in Singapore about 90 workers were injured when a jack-up rig tilted, reports Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM).
One of the three jack-up rig’s leg mechanisms failed to operate during testing works, causing rig’s slanting dangerously to one side and injuring some 90 shipyard workers of whom one is in a critical condition. No fatalities have been reported.
MOM said that the injured workers had been sent to 4 hospitals and 53 of them were discharged in the afternoon.
Officers from MOM’s Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate responded immediately and are on-site investigating the accident.
All work has stopped at the rig.
The shipyard is presently investigating the cause of the incident. As investigations are in progress, the company is unable to provide further details at this stage, said Sembcorp Marine in its confirmation release.
