Leighton Contractors has been awarded a $923 million contract to undertake the Ichthys Project Onshore LNG Facilities Main Civil Works in Blaydin Point, Darwin, Northern Territory, bringing its oil and gas awarded contracts to more than $4.5 billion.
The project involves delivering the main civil infrastructure required for the Ichthys Project Onshore LNG facilities, including piling, foundations, trenching for pipes, cables, sewers and drainage, roads, paving, electrical and instrumentation cabling.
The construct only contract is the third project to be awarded to Leighton Contractors by JKC Australia LNG Pty Ltd (JKC), the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor responsible for the Ichthys Project’s onshore plant and infrastructure.
Craig Laslett, Managing Director of Leighton Contractors , said the company is proud to have been chosen to deliver this vital LNG infrastructure.

Leighton Contractors’ project team will mobilise immediately, with construction to commence on-site in May 2013. The project is due for completion in July 2016.
“Our people have started laying the foundations for a successful project, assembling a highly-skilled and experienced team and establishing key partnerships with specialist contractors to carry out the piling and electrical and instrumentation cabling activities,” Mr Laslett said
“We anticipate more than 3.5 million man-hours will be worked to deliver the project, with a peak workforce of more than 900 people.
“We will provide Darwin’s local workforce and businesses with as many opportunities as possible to capitalise on the delivery of this world-class infrastructure, and support the growth of its skills base and experience for the benefit of future development in the region.”
Leighton Holdings, Chief Executive Officer, Mr Hamish Tyrwhitt , said these awards demonstrated that the Leighton Group was building its core capabilities in those sectors of the market in line with its strategic direction.
“We see the LNG and coal seam methane markets offering significant opportunities for the Leighton Group which has developed a high degree of competency in delivering essential infrastructure for large resources projects,” he said.
