J. M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corp. has launched the environmentally friendly longliner, named the Northern Leader. The vessel, designed by Seattle-based Jensen Maritime Consultants and owned by fishing company Alaskan Leader Fisheries LLC, will be homeported in Kodiak, Alaska.
The 184-foot high tech fishing vessel is capable of holding over 1000 tons of Cod. The Northern Leader is operated by 31 persons and can deploy a long line over 45 miles. The vessel will be used to support the longline fisheries of the North Pacific, Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands. Longline fishing is a commercial fishing technique that uses a long line, called the main line, with baited hooks attached at intervals.

It is powered with five Caterpillar generators supplying two 1000 Kilo Watt Schottle Z drive electric motors. The hold is refrigerated with 3, 150 hp compressors reducing the temperature down as low as -25 degrees F. As one of the most environmentally friendly fishing boats, it will take about 30 days to complete a catch.
The vessel is ABS classed for the Maltese Cross, A1 Fishing Vessel with AMS. Total international tonnage is estimated at 1800 ITC.
This boat will set a new trend in fishing.
