Dinas Hidro-Oseanografi (DISHIDROS), or the Hydro-Oceanographic Office, is the marine surveying and charting authority with the mandate to ensure safety of navigation in Indonesian waters. As Indonesia is an archipelago with more than 17,000 islands and nearly 55,000 km of coastline, DISHIDROS has an extensive hydrographic responsibility.

DISHIDROS has used CARIS solutions for almost twenty years, with the first digital cartographic systems implemented in 1994. To increase rates of production and maintenance for their sizable chart portfolio, consisting of approximately 500 paper charts, 350 ENCs and other thematic products, DISHIDROS recently selected to upgrade their production system to the CARIS Hydrographic Production Database (HPD). As an HPD user, DISHIDROS joins a well established user community with approximately 30 organizations already using HPD.

In addition to HPD, the upgrade provides DISHIDROS with a complete and seamless Ping-to-Chart solution, including CARIS HIPS and SIPS for the processing of hydrographic data and CARIS Bathy DataBASE for the management and analysis of their elevation data sources. The move to the database driven Ping-to-Chart system will allow DISHIDROS to efficiently meet chart quotas, but also reduce duplication of data, improve the security and usability of their marine spatial data sources, and address other GIS (non-navigational) requirements.

As part of the implementation, six DISHIDROS staff from the survey and charting divisions travelled to CARIS headquarters to undergo one month of training. The time at CARIS provided the DISHIDROS team with training on the new system and modern production workflows and the skills to transition DISHIDROS hydrographic capabilities to the next-generation CARIS system.
