Shell believes in the on-going application of new technology to improve safety. Shell’s innovative emergency separation tool (EST) severs, in milliseconds and with very little deformation, any tubular equipment that might be located across the blowout preventer (BOP), allowing the equipment to drop into the well and clear the BOP’s sealing rams. It is a secondary safety mechanism that can be activated to ensure the closing of the BOP.
