CARIS Asia Pacific recently travelled to ‘Windy Wellington’ in order to provide training and consultation to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) for the implementation of CARIS Bathy DataBASE to allow them to efficiently store and manage their bathymetric assets.

NIWA conducts leading environmental science to enable the sustainable management of natural resources for New Zealand and the planet. In addition to conducting their own surveys, NIWA is also a recipient of a large amount of data from third party providers.

Since purchasing CARIS HIPS and SIPS in 2008, the industry leading software has become a cornerstone in the NIWA processing workflow. Implementing Bathy DataBASE incorporates the next step in the CARIS Ping-to-Chart workflow—analysis. In addition to natively opening the CSAR files produced in HIPS and SIPS, NIWA are now able to bring together various other input formats, such as ASCII, BAG and ESRI ASCII grids.

Part of the implementation also involved the creation of a customized metadata catalogue for NIWA, which will allow them to efficiently locate and combine data using sophisticated SQL queries.
