Superior Energy-Marine Technical Services (MTS), a division of Superior Energy Services, Inc., received its first Certificate of Acceptance from a client for the use of their Arctic Containment System (ACS).

Designed, built, owned and operated by MTS, the ACS was developed to act as a containment system for collection and control of potential environmental hazards in the case of a subsea well control incident. Capable of operating in any offshore environment, it is specifically designed for work in harsh and Arctic regions. The ACS was completed in September of 2012 when it received the US Coast Guard official Certificate of Inspection and a Classification Certificate as a Floating Offshore Installation (FOI) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

“A number of successful sea trials were conducted from September 2012 to March of this year in the Puget Sound to test and simulate the operation of the system,” said Scott Powell, Superior’s Vice President of Marine Technical Services. “With confidence, marine and operational crews demonstrated to the representatives from the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) the successful deployment, operation and recovery of all resources.”

BSEE representatives witnessed operational procedural planning, attended Job Safety and Environmental Analyses (JSEA) briefings and monitored all aspects of the deployment from on deck and in the process control room. During the sea trial, the ACS handled more than the design requirements through both its primary and redundant backup systems.
