ACE Winches, the deck machinery specialists, is helping to promote the importance of Modern Apprenticeships to schoolchildren as part of Skills Development Scotland’s – Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2013.

On Wednesday 22nd May 2013, Deryn Patterson, ACE Second Year Technical Apprentice met with a group of S3 pupils at Turriff Academy to tell them about the Craft, Technical and Business Modern Apprenticeship opportunities available at ACE Winches, and her personal experience of learning about a variety of trades within the scheme. Deryn is about to start her second year in the Drawing Office, after spending her first year on rotation in the company’s manufacturing departments including fabrication, hydraulics and assembly.

Skills Development Scotland’s Operation Director Danny Logue said: “We are delighted with the support for Scottish Apprenticeship Week shown by ACE Winches. This forward thinking employer is investing in the future and skills by going into schools and giving pupils the opportunity to find out more about the Modern Apprenticeship programme. Events like the one at Turriff Academy mean young people learn exactly what employers want from them and also what they can expect while working, training and getting that vital first step in their career. The pupils will also hear from an apprentice and that first-hand knowledge from one of their peers is very valuable.”

ACE Winches CEO, Alfie Cheyne commented: “At ACE Winches we run one of the largest Modern Apprentices schemes of any company – large or small – in the UK with over 40 young men and women going through a four-year apprenticeship learning craft and trade skills – as well as Business Apprentices working in our offices. The training these young people receive as they rotate through the divisions of our manufacturing business will lay the foundations for great careers in industry that is crying out for skilled people.

“These young people are the future of manufacturing industry – and without them – and others like them – there cannot be a manufacturing industry in this country. ACE Winches is doing its part to ensure that there is, and we are delighted to join with SCDI during Scottish Apprenticeship Week in support of this effort.”
