An unusual dual christening ceremony of two Platform Supply Vessels was held at Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A on Saturday, 6th of July 2013. Both ships were ordered by one of the leading offshore ship owners of the North Sea.
The ships were christened HIGHLAND DEFENDER and HIGHLAND CHIEFTAIN .
Designed entirely by Polish engineers and built by Polish shipbuilders, the vessels will showcase the Polish naval engineering at the North Sea. The conceptual design and the documentation were developed by a Polish design office – MMC Ship Design & Marine Consulting Ltd. of Gdynia – one of the world leaders in the field.
The vessels, built under supervision of American Bureau of Shipping Classification Society, are to operate under the ENVIRO Notation. They have received the so-called GREEN PASSPORT as their structures comprise no materials harmful to human health or natural environment.
Their range of functions will include carrying loose, liquid and unitized cargoes. Also, both units will have the facilities for containing fires and oil spills.
Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. has produced ships for this owner for several years. The ship owner’s two Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessels have been in trouble-free service since their handover in 2010.
According to the shipyard, the decision to place new orders proves the ship owner’s satisfaction and confidence in Polish naval engineering.
Highland Defender – MMC 887 CD and Highland Chieftain – MMC 879 CD are among the largest vessels in their class. Although they have different design codes and parameters, their features place them among the most modern world’s ships in this category.
