Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in Okpo, South Korea has delivered the second Triple-E container ship, the Maersk Majestic to Danish owner Maersk Line.
The vessel is now on its way from Busan to Gwangyang with its first cargo load. The third container ship in the series, Mary Maersk, has just returned to the yard after a test run, reports Maritime Denmark.
At four-hundred metres long, 59 metres wide and 73 metres high, the 18,000 TEU (twenty-foot container) capacity of the ‘Triple-E’ is 16 percent greater (2,500 containers) than today’s largest container vessel.
Called the ‘Triple-E’ class for the three main purposes behind their creation — economy of scale, energy efficiency and higher degree of eco-friendliness — the ships set a new industry benchmark for size and fuel efficiency. With unique design features for slower speeds and maximum efficiency, the vessels will emit 50% less CO2 per container moved than the current average on the Asia-Europe route.
The 20 Triple-E vessels will be phased in gradually over the next couple of years on the existing route between Asia and Northern Europe (AE10).
