Triggered by a desire to introduce innovative solutions aimed at facilitating work and anticipating potential dangers to the environment, General Electric (GE), an American multinational conglomerate corporation, is working on implementing the known technology and knowledge in segments never considered before.
Namely, GE is working out a way to incorporate X-ray technology, widely used for medical purposes in subsea systems, so as to be able to detect problems in pipe-line infrastructure and prevent them from maturing.
The same way X-ray technology enables visualization of the inside of the human body, X-rays subsea are aimed at visualizing the things unseen by the human eye, specifically adapted to the subsea environment which is hard to reach as it is.
Given the fact that it is practically impossible to take out the pipe-lines and bring them to a lab for inspection, the idea is to apply radiological solutions in detecting pipe corrosion before it becomes pipe wreckage, leakage before it evolves into a major oil spill.
