On January 24, 2014, Under Secretary of the Army, Joseph W. Westphal, visited the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, to be brief on the final portion of the NY/NJ harbor deepening project and updated on the Hurricane Sandy response.

The officials discussed the harbor deepening project, which is designed to deepen the channels to 50 feet in preparation for accommodating larger container vessels following completion of the Panama Canal expansion in 2015.

Under Secretary of the Army, Joseph W. Westphal, also recognized and thanked army civilians around the nation for their hard work.
