A public scoping meeting on the proposed shallow water habitat projects will be held Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Brownville Concert Hall, 126 Atlantic Street, Brownville, Neb.
The purpose of the meeting is to seek public input on the development of two proposed shallow water habitat projects: Brownville Bend located a half mile south of Brownville, and Langdon Bend located two miles east of Nemaha, Neb.
The meeting will be hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Both projects will restore a portion of the habitat that existed prior to the creation of the Bank Stabilization and Navigation Project on the Missouri River. Creation of this habitat is necessary to fulfill recommendations in the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Biological Opinion for the Operation of the Missouri River Main Stem Reservoir System, Operation and Maintenance of the Missouri River Bank Stabilization and Navigation Project, and Operation of the Kansas River Reservoir System.
The public meeting will run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a brief opening presentation followed by an open house session. During the open house session, the project team will be available at information stations to answer questions and gather public input on the project.
“The purpose of site-specific Missouri River Recovery Program projects such as Brownville Bend and Langdon Bend is to assist in recovering populations of the federally endangered pallid sturgeon and to restore fish and wildlife habitat that was lost due to construction of the Missouri River Bank Stabilization and Navigation Project, ” said Dave Crane, Environmental Resource Specialist with the Corps of Engineers .
