Aveillant, the UK developer of 3D Holographic Radar™, has successfully installed a trial system in north Kent, England, to demonstrate its ability to mitigate wind turbine clutter from an offshore wind farm.

The system was delivered to site, installed and put to operation within just eight hours. The Holographic Radar™ not only successfully identified and intelligently removed the offshore wind turbines from the display but it was also able to remove sea clutter, creating a clear airspace display.

3D Holographic Radar has already been assessed and proven at two test sites in Scotland, where it was integrated with Primary Surveillance Radar, and it has been independently verified to have a Probability of Detection (PD) of more than 99% over the wind farm. It has also proved to be a robust solution, remaining in operation during recent strong winds of 90+mph.

Gordon Oswald, Chief Technology Officer at Aveillant , said: “Offshore wind farms can pose many problems for traditional radar solutions. Not only do the large numbers of turbines normally found in offshore installations create huge interference, but the sea clutter, or false returns from waves, also affects the ATC display. The 3D Holographic Radar™ solution provides a new way of monitoring airspace, intelligently identifying clutter including waves and wind turbines, and differentiating them from aircraft, allowing for a constant clear view of the airspace around and above the wind farm. Our mitigation service can be set up very quickly and simply and we’re looking forward to further demonstrating its benefits at this site over the coming months, including integration with the latest plot extracted radar technology.”
