Island of Yell, an island in the Shetlands, is about to receive the world’s first community-owned tidal energy generator.

As The Shetland Times reports, the works on 30kW generator are expected to start within a week, as all the component parts have been delivered.

A workboat will help install the Nova-30 device in Bluemull Sound, as long as the weather conditions remain suitable.

The Nova-30 has a three-bladed rotor for extracting reliable energy from the tides.

The tidal turbine will be used to power the ice plant in Cullivoe and in cases when the ice plant is not being used, the surplus of electricity will be transferred to the local grid.
