The Army Corps of Engineers approved $3 million in federal funding for the Royal River deepening project, according to wgme.com.
This dredging program is expected to commence in the fall and it will take three to four weeks to complete.
Steve Arnold of the Harbor and Waterfront Committee said: “It has just been tough to get funds from the federal government. For the past five or seven years, with the economic downturn, there hasn’t been a lot of money.”
The Royal River, last time dredged 17 years ago, has become so shallow that operators of the bigger vessels that coming in are afraid they will get into trouble, reports wgme.com.
