Australia’s leading national submarine and shipbuilder, ASC, has welcomed 23 new apprentices to its workforce.
ASC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Steve Ludlam , said this takes ASC’s total number of apprentices to 137. “ ASC is proud to be one of the largest employers of apprentices,” said Mr Ludlam. “We are committed to leading the development of skill and talent in our industry.”
Most of the apprentices are based in South Australia, with eleven apprentices based at ASC’s Western Australia facility. The 23 new apprentices include 11 electrical, 5 mechanical, 4 fabrication and 3 sheet metal apprentices.
“ Naval submarines and ships are amongst the most complex pieces of machinery in the world, providing the opportunity to develop highly specialised skills ,” said Mr Ludlam and announced Alex Turner, a graduating electrical apprentice, as the winner of ASC’s Alan Saunders Award. “ National shipbuilding remains one of the great sources of advanced manufacturing in Australia and these apprentices are at the beginning of what can be long and rewarding careers. ”
This award is presented annually to the apprentice who has demonstrated an outstanding level of initiative while applying a high level of safety awareness and a commitment to ASC’s values.
