BP will draw from the success of its innovative Field of the Future® programme and pose challenging questions of the industry on the future aspirations for the digital oilfield at SPE Intelligent Energy 2014 in Utrecht, from April 1-3.

Under the theme empowered by real time® integrated data, BP will draw on its experiences from its Field of the Future® programme to review the progress of oilfield digitalisation to date and encourage debate on how the industry will develop going forward.

It is now more than 12 years since the Field of the Future® concept was established in BP to improve decision-making through realtime data-to-decision capabilities in production, operations and reservoir management. Over that time, the Field of the Future® flagship has developed expertise in a range of disciplines including advanced remote surveillance, the handling and analysis of realtime data, remote well operations and downhole and subsea sensors.

The programme provides a suite of digital technology-based solutions, empowered by real time® information, focused on making better decisions faster and has proved to be a significant success with key benefits including:

• stimulating effective organisational engagement

• delivering sustainable value by developing new, more efficient ways of working to replace legacy working practices

• developing productised solutions and standards to create an offer aligned with and owned by its operating functions

• driving demonstrable value delivery in safety management, plant reliability and production optimisation

BP has developed and widely deployed more than 15 proprietary digital information solutions that support common processes and deliver significant value, providing a material impact on production delivery and asset integrity. Digitalisation of BP’s upstream business impacts a significant and growing proportion of net production and routinely supports more than 80% of the company’s top 100 wells.

As well as expanding on the success of Field of the Future® program to date, BP will pose to IE2014 attendees at the BP stand, a series of daily thought provoking questions on the future challenges and opportunities facing the digital oilfield.

Steve Roberts , Vice President of the Field of the Future® Technology Flagship at BP, said: “The vision of harnessing realtime information to make better, faster decisions that impact rate, recovery, risk management and cost remains as potent a force in marshalling investment in technology as at any time over the past decade.

“Our solutions have been applied to diverse challenges, from equipment health monitoring to managing plant and well integrity to optimising production. Our pioneering Field of the Future® concept is now a routine part of how BP builds projects and operates fields across much of our portfolio and the return on investment has been significant through efficient risk management, improved equipment reliability, increased production and enhanced operating efficiency.

“Although the industry still has a long way to go in realising the full potential from digital oilfield concepts, we are already developing our focus of how the future could look. We retrieved useful data from last year’s Intelligent Energy poll and we will be keen to explore and debate these issues once again at Intelligent Energy 2014.”
