Three firms are now battling it out to win the contract to construct a £36 million sea defence scheme from Holland Haven to Clacton Pier.

Tenders were opened last week and now the job begins to decide which company will be successful. Tendring District Council’s (TDC) Engineering Department will analyse all the documents received and evaluate them.

Nick Turner, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Coast Protection , said that all three tenders came in under the maximum budget for the project. They also came within the time constraints the Council has laid down for the work to be completed.

“The evaluation process will be carried out as soon as possible, ” Turner said.

The scheme received planning permission in January, however the evaluation process is likely to take several weeks. The plan is being hailed as a vital boost for regenerating the seafront as well as protecting a large number of homes.

It involves demolishing a number of existing timber and concrete groynes along the frontage and building 23 fishtail groynes in their place.

The plans also include a beach recharge of around 900,000 cubic metres of material.
