Prelude FLNG (floating liquefied natural gas) project, being built at the Samsung Heavy Industries yard in Geoje (South Korea), is the latest in a line of Shell achievements in developing new technologies for the oil and gas industry, reinforcing its leadership in technology and innovation.
Cris Moreno, LNG CSU Superintendent at Shell, has a big job on his hands. His task is to make sure Shell’s Prelude FLNG project can transfer its liquid cargo in one of the loneliest places on the planet; 200km’s off the north-west coast of Australia.
It took thousands of hours to develop the technology needed to deliver the challenge, but Cris is finally ready to test these ‘arms of innovation’ for the first time.
Once complete, Prelude FLNG will be the largest floating facility ever built. The 600,000 tonnes facility will be almost half a kilometre in length (488 metres or 1,601 feet) and will displace six times as much water as the largest aircraft carrier.
Shell is the operator of Prelude FLNG in joint venture with INPEX (17.5%), KOGAS (10%) and OPIC (5%), working with long-term strategic partners Technip and Samsung Heavy Industries (the Technip Samsung Consortium).
