The Port of Pascagoula plans to borrow up to $5 million for upgrades to a Bayou Casotte wharf that will aid Chevron in importing mixed xylenes.

Port director Mark McAndrews and other port leaders went before the Jackson County Board of Supervisors on Monday for a closed session discussion of the project.

After the discussion, supervisors took a public vote to move forward with the preliminary steps required for the money to be borrowed.

Board of Supervisors President Troy Ross said although the port will borrow the money, Chevron has agreed to pay back the loan and to also pay usage fees associated with the wharf, which will remain under the port’s ownership and direction.

Alan Sudduth, Chevron’s public and government affairs director, confirmed Tuesday that the company requested the upgrades and will pay for the project.
