Dredging work in the St. Lucie Inlet is complete with over 350,000 cubic yards of sand dredged from the Inlet.
Approximately 8,000 feet of beach within Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge has been renourished with materials dredged from the inlet.
The latter part of the project was Martin County’s continuation of the original U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredging project, which ended Feb. 21. The Army Corps contract required the contractor remove at least 200,000 cubic yards of sand from the St. Lucie Inlet navigation channel and impoundment basin and bypass that sand to the downdrift beach within the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge
The Martin County project allowed for an additional 150,000 cubic yards of sand to be removed. The inlet’s impoundment basin was designed to accommodate a three to four-year maintenance dredging interval.
