The District of Columbia’s Southwest Waterfront recently hit a significant milestone when, after eight years of due diligence, planning, design, permitting and rezoning, the Hoffman-Madison Waterfront Development team broke ground on The Wharf.
As a key member of the team, Moffatt & Nichol is responsible for the planning, design, permitting, inspection, cost estimating and financial evaluation of all waterside elements for the project. The firm is also providing a marine resident engineer to provide construction support services for all of the maritime facilities.
The groundbreaking ceremony featured speeches from the developers and city leaders, including Mayor Vince Gray and members of the D.C. Council.
The Wharf will be a world-class, mixed-use waterfront redevelopment on the mile-long historic Washington Channel, with a development area that stretches across 24 acres of land and more than 50 acres of water.
Phase I, estimated to be complete in 2017, encompasses 1.5 million square feet of development. On the water, there will be four major public access piers, a private yacht club and a new public marina with transient facilities for visiting boaters.
The water plan developed by Moffatt & Nichol generates a host of maritime activities to establish the Southwest Waterfront as a regional harbor destination. All maritime activity connects to the land through a series of programmable piers, which will serve as an extension of the city’s grid into the water.
These active piers will connect to a shared street or “Wharf” at the core of the site, drawing pedestrians past the shoreline and uniting land and maritime uses in a lively, 24-hour urban setting.
