The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District, the County of Santa Barbara and the City of Santa Maria will host a Santa Maria River Levee Improvement Project Completion Ceremony tomorrow.

This event signals the end of the six year long construction project to repair the levee. The ceremony will be held near the intersection of Carlotti Drive and Seward Drive at the levee, in the City of Santa Maria.

Rep. Lois Capps, 24th Congressional District, will be the keynote speaker for the ceremony.

The project, which began October 2009, strengthens nearly seven miles of levee from Blosser Street to the Bradley Canyon Levee, east of the city’s landfill.

After completion of the initial phases of the project, an additional engineering analysis was conducted and the findings determined that the levee system was still susceptible to the impinging flow attacks upstream of the Bradley Canyon confluence.

Construction for 3700 feet of the Bradley Canyon Levee commenced in March 2013. Work was completed in April.
