Brazil asked for assistance from U.S. and foreign companies to conduct $1.5 billion dredging works and seaport improvements.
As Reuters reports, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx said: “Both of our countries have more demand for infrastructure than there is public resources .
“There’s an awful lot of private capital parked on the sidelines. The conversation focused on how we can shift that.”
Brazil plans to spend $384 million in 2014 and a further $1.1 billion in related maintenance over the next 10 years.
The ports that are on the list for dredging are: Santos, Rio de Janeiro, Mucuripe, Suape, Recife and Niteroi.
Dredging would allow larger and more efficient vessels to access the ports.
