Patient dies after stepping out of helicopter over North Sea

A man, working on Statoil’s Troll A platform fell to his death after being lifted off by a helicopter.

A man, working on Statoil’s Troll A platform in the North Sea, fell to his death after being lifted off by a helicopter.

According to Sysla.no, the man, in his 30s, was feeling ill and the helicopter arrived around eight o’clock Wednesday morning, to bring him back to shore.

After taking off from the platform, when the CHC-owned helicopter was a few miles from shore, en route to Bergen, the patient got out of the helicopter and according to Offshore.no, fell into the sea, 600 meters below.

The body has been recovered an hour later and the incident is being investigated by the police.

The Troll field lies in the northern part of the North Sea, around 65 kilometres west of Kollsnes, near Bergen, Norway.

Update:

The 37-year-old was from Sweden, and according to reports, he is believed to have committed suicide after climbing through the helicopter’s emergency exit.

According to AFP, he was working on the Troll A for Kaefer Energy, Statoil’s subcontractor.
