Congressman Tim Bishop released the following statement regarding the announcement that the Army Corps of Engineers, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Suffolk County have signed agreements for the Fire Island to Moriches Inlet project:

“I, along with Senator Schumer, have remained committed to working together with the federal, state and local stakeholders to keep the project on as tight a timeline as possible. I would like to extend my gratitude to Governor Cuomo, County Executive Bellone and all of the parties involved in this announcement for their steadfast dedication to ensuring that Long Island, particularly the Tri-Hamlet Peninsula, can come back from Sandy stronger than it was before. Moving this project forward in order to provide communities in this area with critical coastal protection remains a top priority and this is a positive step towards that objective.”

The project will be undertaken in conjunction with the Army Corps and Suffolk County and is set to start in September. This development program will include the construction of dunes and beaches in the 19-mile stretch between Fire Island Inlet and Moriches Inlet.
