Riffgat offshore wind farm, Germany’s first commercial wind farm in the North Sea, has exceeded expectations in power production, even though it has been feeding power since February.

The offshore wind farm was officially launched on August 10 last year. However, due to the delayed grid connection, it started supplying power on February 13 of this year.

Nevertheless, Irina Lucke, CEO of EWE and Project Manager for Riffgat , expressed the company’s satisfaction: “Although Riffgat has been feeding electricity into the grid only since spring, by the end of June it covered 140 million kilowatt hours of the annual electricity requirements of 40,000 households – that is well above our expectations. ”

Riffgat offshore wind farm, which features thirty Siemens’ 3.6 MW wind turbines, is located 15 kilometers off the North Sea island of Borkum. The construction of the offshore wind farm started in June 2012, and EWE managed to build 30 wind turbines with a total capacity of 108 MW in just 14 months of construction.
