The Mongla Port Authority has adopted a master plan for the development of the country’s second largest port that will be implemented within the 2021 strategy, according to the government’s announcement.
The officials said that the authorities have already undertaken a scheme to rebuild No-2 and No-4 jetties of Mongla Port which have been lying incomplete for the last four decades.
A joint venture company has shown keen interest to rebuild the two jetties through public private partnership (PPP) at a cost Tk 500 crore.
The authorities have also undertaken other schemes to turn No-10 and No-11 jetties into high multipurpose jetties to reduce the pressure of imported goods.
According to the officials, the Mongla Port Authority took eight development projects at a cost of Tk 551.77 crore during the tenure of the previous Awami League government for modernizing the country’s second largest port.
Chairman of Mongla Port Authority Comodor H R Bhuiyan said that a project involving Tk 126 crore for increasing navigability of the 13 km River from “Joymony Gol” to the “Port City” would be completed by the next month.
He also said that another project for dredging the outer bar of Hiron point at the gateway of Mongla Port has already been completed, adding that at least 1,000 ships could be berthed at the Mongla Port by 2030.
