Deepening the Savannah harbor is one step closer, with officials from the Corps of Engineers and the State of Georgia contract signing of a Project Partnership Agreement scheduled for Oct. 8.
The signing of the PPA allows the Corps of Engineers to accept bids for the first contracts to be awarded under the $706 million Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP). The SHEP will deepen the Savannah Harbor federal shipping channel from a depth of -42 feet to -47 feet.
Conducted studies demonstrate that the deepening will produce substantial economic benefits for the nation by enabling larger and more heavily-loaded vessels to call on the harbor with fewer tidal delays.
The Corps of Engineers Savannah District announced two contracts this week. One covers dredging the outer harbor and creating a channel extension. The other, to be announced later today, will construct a dissolved oxygen injection system for the inner harbor. The PPA must be signed before bids can be accepted for these contracts.
Details on time and place of the PPA signing will be released later by Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal’s media office.
