Danish-based container shipping line Maersk Line has been named Sustainable Ship Operator of the Year at the inaugural Ship Efficiency Awards 2014.

The award, which was announced at a ceremony in London on October 2, 2014, celebrates the shipping line that demonstrates an industry-leading commitment to energy efficiency, environmental performance or CSR responsibilities.

Signe Jensen, Head of Sustainability, Maersk Line , said “We are delighted to be recognised for our commitment to sustainable shipping. We have made significant reductions in our CO2 emissions over the last year, and this award is dedicated to our employees and customers who support our efforts.”

In 2013, Maersk Line reduced CO2 emissions by 12 per cent per container-kilometre, using 1.2 million tonnes of fuel less than 2012, contributing USD 764 million to the bottom line. It has implemented a number of initiatives to deliver improved energy efficiency, including the introduction of Triple E vessels, the overhaul of its network and the retrofitting of its existing fleet.
