The Onondaga Lake cleanup project is well underway with the 90% of the lake dredging already completed. More than 500 Central New York scientists, engineers, and skilled craft laborers are working with Honeywell on the project making sure that everything goes as planned.

During the project, approximately 2 million cubic yards of material will be removed from Onondaga Lake and pumped to a consolidation area at former industrial property off of Airport Road for drying and safe isolation long term.

About 3 billion gallons of water will be treated. Approximately 450 acres of the lake will be capped to provide a new habitat layer, prevent erosion, and isolate remaining contaminants. More than 1.1 million plants, trees, and shrubs are being planted and more than 50 acres of wetlands enhanced.

The project is on schedule to be finished in 2016 with plans for dredging to be completed in 2014, one year ahead of schedule.
