National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC) will take part in an ambitious world class project to dredge the 35km of the New Suez Canal, parallel to the existing one. The $1.5 billion contract for the project was announced on October 18th by the Head of the Suez Canal Authority, Admiral Mohab Memish and Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb.

NMDC will lead the consortium, consisting of Boskalis, Van Oord and Jan De Nul to complete the works before August 2015.

For this project, up to 20 Cutter Suction Dredgers will be mobilized in order to dredge approximately 180 million m³ of soil.

The first vessel, NMDC’s Al Mirfa is already on its way to Suez. Al Mirfa is currently being mobilized by a heavy lift vessel and should arrive at the site before the end of the month.

The total contract includes construction of the parallel section of the canal with a length of approximately 50 kilometers, which will allow ships to simultaneously transit in two directions, as well as the widening and deepening of a number of existing sections to a depth of 24 meters.
