The Westmoreland Park ecosystem restoration project is completed and all that is left to do now is to attend the park grand reopening ceremony on October 25th 2014.

The park was closed to the public in June 2013 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers partnered with the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services to remove the man-made duck pond and restore a natural wetland area.

At the same time Portland Parks and Recreation began a project to redesign the park’s play area and create the city’s first nature-based play area.

The formal ceremony will feature a Native American blessing by Prof. Judy Bluehorse Skelton; remarks from U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer, Portland Commissioner Nick Fish, Parks Director Mike Abbate and Col. Jose Aguilar, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Portland District Commander, among others; and a ceremonial planting to commemorate the partnership between the city and the Corps, and the community commitment to environmental stewardship.
