South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has held a naming ceremony for four semi-submersible rigs, Hull No. 3031, 3032, 3034, 3035, ordered by the Norwegian-based Songa Offshore.
Around 290 guests attended the naming ceremony held in H quay, at the Okpo shipyard, on October 24, including Frederik W. Mohn, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Songa Offshore SE, Bjørnar Iversen, Chief Executive Officer for Songa Offshore and Jaeho Ko, President and CEO of DSME.
The four women sponsors, Ekaterina Mohn, Beate Myking, Marjoleine Boogers and Karin Hansson, were on hand to name each rig as: Songa Equinox, Songa Endurance, Songa Encourage, Songa Enabler.
DSME and Songa Offshore signed these contracts on two separate occasions in September 2011 and again in May 2012. These semi-submersible rigs are able to drill down to a maximum of 8,500m in water up to 500m in depth and operate in the bad weather and intense cold of the North Sea, the press release read.
These rigs called ‘Category-D’, are new generation drilling and well intervention rigs specifically constructed for Norwegian Continental Shelf operations. According to DSME, they are outfitted with winterization and heat tracing systems making them uniquely prepared for the harsh weather conditions of the North Sea.
DSME says these rigs applied ‘DNV DYNPOS – ER’ regulation, which is a much stricter regulation when compared to a generalized positioning system such as the Dynamic Positioning System (DPS).
Songa Offshore said on Friday (October 31) that the company has signed the documentation for financing Songa Encourage and Songa Enabler Cat D drilling rigs.
