The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District, is conducting dredging operations with the help from contractors at the Homer Harbor entrance channel.

The picture, taken by Seekwan Tan on September 6th, shows hydraulic cutterhead dredger taking the Homer Harbor project.

An estimated 12,000 cubic yards of material will be removed from the basin in order to comply with the Rivers and Harbors Act which mandates the basin’s least feet of depth.

Currently, this annual dredging operation maintains a depth of minus 20 feet in the entrance channel.

USACE navigation mission is to provide safe, reliable, efficient, effective and environmentally sustainable waterborne transportation systems for movement of commerce, national security needs and recreation. Dredging is necessary for harbors to allow safe passage of marine vessels.
