Earlier in September, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District awarded a $10 million contract for the Tybee Island shoreline project that will provide greater protection against future storms and reinforce the beach at this coastal Georgia community with additional sand.

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company of Oak Brook, Illinois, won the contract, under which approximately 1.3 million cubic yards of sand will be added to approximately 3 miles of beach front from the north beach near Old Fort Screven to 18th Street.

The photos (taken by Billy Birdwell on November 4, 2014) show GLDD making significant progress moving beach-quality sand from off-shore onto the Tybee Island.
