Deltares and Arcadis have started a project in Colombia to prevent flooding by using the right software models and by training the local operation managers.

Severe floods hit the Cauca region in 2010, causing extensive damage. To prevent future flooding the team will migrate and update a model of the river Cauca and work out ways of optimizing the operation of the Salvajina reservoir.

The CVC-team will also receive training with the software tools SOBEK and RTC-Tools for operating reservoirs. SOBEK can be used to produce models for the effective design of approaches to prevent flooding from the Cauca in the future. Studying the operation of the Salvajina reservoir will contribute to flood prevention.

The training will help CVC to use the software in their day-to-day work.

The project is a partnership between the Corporación Autónoma Regional del Valle del Cauca (CVC), Deltares and Arcadis, with co-financing from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).

The results of the project are expected in the summer of 2015.
