Head of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Mohab Mamish and United Arab Emirates Minister of State Sultan Ahmed al-Gaber earlier this week gave the green light for the start of dredging works on the new Suez Canal project.

Earlier this month, the heavy duty dredger of the National Marine Dredging Company ‘al-Mirfa’, one of many dredging vessels that will be used for the works, entered the new Suez Canal project site.

NMDC will lead the consortium, consisting of Boskalis, Van Oord and Jan De Nul to complete the works before August 2015.

The total contract for the dredging works, estimated to be worth over $2 billion, includes construction of the parallel section of the canal with a length of approximately 50 kilometers as well as the widening and deepening of a number of existing sections to a depth of 24 meters.

Companies from Egypt, UAE, the US, Belgium, and the Netherlands are taking part in the dredging works on the new waterway.
