The second phase of the Hulhumalé Dredging & Reclamation project in the Maldives is about to begin in the next few weeks. The $50 million project was awarded to Dredging International NV, Belgium earlier this year.

Arrival of Dredging International’s vessel that will take part in the project has been set for late December. Preparations for the vessel’s arrival, including laying pipes, are already on the way, according to Suhail Ahmed, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC)’s Managing Director.

It is estimated that the Hulhumalé Phase II reclamation and coastal protection works will be completed by the end of December 2015.

The Hulhumalé Phase II comprises of 240 hectares of land with a target population of 100,000 people. This development consists of Residential Developments, Business District & Commercial Spine, Light Industrial Park, Yatch Marina & Cruise Terminal, Knowledge Park & Technology Park, Heritage Island and a Tourism District.

Both Hulhumalé Phase I & Phase II developments are planned in line with the Government’s overall vision to bring about sustainable youth related developments.

Dredging International , one of the primary operating companies of the DEME Group, was officially established in 1974. The company was created from the dredging division of Ackermans & van Haaren (founded as early as 1852) and Société Générale de Dragage. Working on every continent, the company is specialized in the construction and development of harbors, artificial islands, estuarial dams, canals and inland waterways, dyke construction and reinforcement, beach replenishment and coastal protection, supply of dredged aggregates and salvage activities.
