Wintershall has received consent from the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) Norway to carry out exploration drilling of well 6406/2-8 in the Norwegian Sea.
Wintershall Norge AS is the operator for production licence 589 in block 6406/2 in the Norwegian Sea. Exploration well 6406/2-8 is to be drilled in a prospect called Imsa.
The site is 15 km south of the Kristin field and around 190 km NNW of Kristiansund. Water depth at the site is approx. 262 metres.
Drilling is scheduled to begin at the earliest in December 2014 and estimated to last 106 days. According to the PSA, in the event of a discovery, the activity may last a further 61 days for well testing.
Drilling is to be carried out using Transocean Arctic, a semi-submersible drilling rig owned and operated by Transocean. It was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan in 1987, and substantially upgraded in 2004. It was issued with an Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) by the PSA in July 2004.
