Baltimore Port Alliance has just released a video about Masonville, an innovative environmental project that utilizes dredge material to create new usable land for the port and cleans up natural space that is used by the community.
Construction of the Masonville Dredged Material Containment Facility began in 2007 and the site began receiving dredged material in 2012.
Designed to contain dredged sediment from the Baltimore Harbor, Masonville is located on the southern shore of the Patapsco River’s middle branch, one mile downstream of the Hanover Street Bridge and adjacent to an abandoned ironworks.
The site will be home to the Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center. The list of enhancements also includes a bird sanctuary, hiking trails, a fishing pier, and several tidal and non-tidal wetlands.
